چکیده

We investigate f (R) theories of gravity within the Palatini approach and show how one can determine the expansion history, H(a), for an arbitrary choice of f (R). As an example, we consider cosmological constraints on such theories arising from the supernova type Ia, large scale structure formation and cosmic microwave background observations. We find that best fit to the data is a non-null leading order correction to the Einstein gravity, but the current data exhibits no significant preference over the concordance ΛCDM model. Our results show that the often considered 1/R models are not compatible with the data. The results demonstrate that the background expansion alone can act as a good discriminator between modified gravity models when multiple data sets are used.

f(R) theories of gravity

Modified gravity theories have received increased attention lately due to combined motivation coming from high-energy physics, cosmology and astrophysics. Among numerous alternatives to Einstein’s theory of gravity, theories which include higher order curvature invariants, and specifically the particular class of f(R) theories, have a long history. In the last five years there has been a new st...

A no-go theorem for polytropic spheres in Palatini f(R) gravity

Non-vacuum static spherically-symmetric solutions in Palatini f(R) gravity are examined. It is shown that for generic choices of f(R), there are commonly-used equations of state for which no satisfactory physical solution of the field equations can be found within this framework, apart from in the special case of General Relativity, casting doubt on whether Palatini f(R) gravity can be consider...

Indistinguishable Macroscopic Behaviour of Palatini Gravities and General Relativity

We show that, within some modified gravity theories, such as the Palatini models, the non-linear nature of the field equations implies that the usual näıve averaging procedure (replacing the microscopic energy-momentum by its cosmological average) could be invalid. As a consequence, the relative motion of particles in Palatini theories is actually indistinguishable from that predicted by Genera...

A ug 2 01 3 Hybrid modified gravity unifying local tests , galactic dynamics and late - time cosmic acceleration ∗

The non-equivalence between the metric and Palatini formalisms of f(R) gravity is an intriguing feature of these theories. However, in the recently proposed hybrid metric-Palatini gravity, consisting of the superposition of the metric Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian with an f(R) term constructed à la Palatini, the “true” gravitational field is described by the interpolation of these two non-equival...

Constraining f(R) gravity in the Palatini formalism

Although several models of f(R) theories of gravity within the Palatini approach have been studied already, the interest was concentrated on those that have an effect on the late-time evolution of the universe, by the inclusion for example of terms inversely proportional to the scalar curvature in the gravitational action. However, additional positive powers of the curvature also provide intere...
